JLI invites artists to sample painting techniques as inspired by the visual genre of the Western. Artists will overview the painting of the great skyscapes captured by the 1992 Western classic Unforgiven, as directed by Clint Eastwood. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and Best Director. Artists will work on developing illustration techniques inspired by the "drained, wintry look" of the western. Join us on Fridays from 330-430.

JLI renews its development of talented graphic artist with a in depth look at the imaginative genre of the western. This quarter we will use the artwork of legendary comic book artist Tony DeZuniga. Along the way we will use the instructional pattern for creating character designed by Tom Bancroft. DeZuniga is famed for his illustration work for DC comics and his creation, Jonah Hex. JLI invites artists to develop their painting techniques as inspired by the work of Man of Action's BEN 10. The animated series follows ten year old Ben Tennyson who finds a device out in the woods called the Omnitrix, which allows him to turn into ten different aliens species. Throughout his summer vacation, travelling the country in the Rustbucket with his Grandpa Max and his cousin Gwen, Ben fights crime and evil aliens with his new powers, gaining the ability to turn into more aliens along the way.

JLI brings tradtional and digital techniques together using the making of maquettes as inspired by the work of the Walt Disney Studios and their library of animated animal characters. Learn the process and materials used to form the head of these popular characters and create new 3D ones of your own. Artists will build wireframes, light weight forms in foil, and visualize with polymer clay.

JLI welcomes you to our new drawing basics class format that includes the beginnings of the illustrated genre in cartoon and comic art. This quarter we will look at the creative works of Pixar director Brad Bird.

Using the films Ratitouille, The Incredibles, and the Iron Giant as reference, art students will be shown a variety of illustration techniques as drawn in a how-to format. By the end of quarter each artist will come away with skills including guidelines for drawing human and fictional characters, drawing characters with action,and compositional storytelling rules.
