Creating Believable Characters

This post in About.com's Fiction Writing Series is a very useful prompting tool to help you addresses the important aspect of creating believable characters for your stories. It accomplishes this by asking Ten Questions.

Here's one of them:

4. What is your character called?
Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? According to novelist Elinor Lipman, absolutely not: "Names have subtext and identity. If your main characters are Kaplans, you've got yourself a Jewish novel, and if your hero is Smedley Winthrop III, you've given him a trust fund. Nomenclature done right contributes to characterization." Your character's name provides a lot of information -- not only about ethnicity -- but about your character's age, background, and social class.

Creativity Portal has quite a few resources related to writing and creativity of all sorts. This article titled "Creating a Writers Journal" by Molly J. Anderson-Childers discusses the value of keeping a Writers Workbook as a tool to to improve your writing skills.

Here's an excerpt ...

"What’s the difference between a journal and a writer’s notebook? They’re as different as apples and zebras! It is a matter of scope and subject, function and form…while a journal traditionally focuses on the daily events of one’s life, the writer’s notebook allows you to look beyond the surface events and delve into the life of the mind."

Ideas Won't Keep: Cahier Idea Notebook

Submitted by Ninth Wave Designs on Fri, 06/13/2008 - 14:58.
Ninth Wave Designs's picture

ORIGINAL POST DATE: August 17, 2006

The title for the post comes from the following quote by Alfred North Whitehead:

"The vitality of thought is in adventure. Ideas won't keep. Something must be done about them."

This is a combination post of "Quotes for Your Notebook" and "Moleskinei Creations" themes, brought about by my need for a notebook to have handy to toss various ideas into. I generally use my Moleskine Pocket Daily Diary to record stray thoughts and brief ideas - of the more random and passing nature of made up movie titles or simple plot outlines for stories I will never get around to writing.

I also needed a notebook that would provide the space for larger ideas, where I could write several pages compared to the several sentence lengths in my daily diary. I chose a Moleskine large kraft Cahier with squared pages, but since I have several of these floating around for different uses I wanted the idea book to stand out from the others.

I started by making the painting of the light bulb in my pocket size Moleskine Watercolor Reporter notebook. I used watercolor colored pencils and Pitt brush markers to paint the image, and then removed the page from the notebook. I cut a hole in the cover of the large Cahier in the shape of the light bulb, and then used a combination of glue stick and tape to secure the watercolor page inside the front cover. I am happy with the results, and it is easy for me to find this notebook among the clutter on my desk.

If Alfred North Whitehead's words are to be followed, then something indeed needs to be done to keep our ideas - and the pages of a humble Cahier might be just the place for those vital intellectual adventures to work themselves out.

One of my hobbies is fly fishing. I received a fishing theme journal book as a gift from a long time friend who I've enjoyed spending time with outdoors through the years. Together we've grown our appreciation and understanding of the natural world and it's wonders. Since that time I've enjoyed keeping a journal about daily fishing excursions and outdoor experiences when on a trips to a unique location.
