This was more like a book I planned on writing one day. Everyone in my family has a dog, except me (until last year). I was always jokingly adding reasons as to why I didn't have one and never would. When I went to my Mom's house wearing black and left wearing her white dogs fur all over I'd say "reason number 497 why NOT to have a dog." This was an ongoing (years), out loud list, I will forever be known for in my family. Picking up poop, $400 teeth cleanings, dog sitters during vacations, barking, begging, etc. the list went on and on. Last year I got a dog and writers block. I should have kept a journal then of the hundreds of reasons why I shouldn't have a dog, it would be cute to read now. I was originally thinking it would make a good children's book marketed for parent's who didn't want to get them a dog.

Angie - Love this topic. Even though I have a dog and have had a series of dogs over the years, having them just gives you more reasons not to have them so I am surprised by your writers block. It's also what makes them endearing.
Our houdini can open just about any door in the house unless you dead bolt it. This leads to myriads of trouble:
1. Playing with the skunks and then running into our bedroom at 2am - just happened again last week for the 3rd or 4th time in the past year
2. Tracking mud into the house and then jumping up on our bed in the morning leaving paw prints on bead spread and carpet.
3. Escaping out the front door, running down to neighbors house, letting herself into their back yard, swimming in their pool and then opening thier sliding door and taking a nap on thier bed.
No, really...dogs are a lot of work. But I know that you have a dog now so how about 1000 and 1 reasons why having a dog is sooooo great! :)~
Speaking of inventive journaling and 1000 reasons not to have a dog. Check this out.
My feeling is that you have to have the right dog to have a great dog. I have a golden retrevier and she is the best dog I could have ever wanted. Growing up when i played baseball and took batting practice she would stand behind my dad who was pitching and go and retrieve any ball I hit. She even got hit once by accident but that did not stop her. At home in the morning we used to have to walk a good distance to get our newspaper. In two days we were able to teach her to go and fetch the newspaper. So no longer is one of us scurying out in bare cold feet to get it. Now we just have to open the door and the paper is delivered right to our feet. If you want a great dog a Golden Retriever is the best dog you can own in my opinion. But i do agree dogs are tons of work.
My next book will be "Reasons TO have a Dog!"
