JLI welcome you to our new drawing class format that includes the beginnings of the illustrated genre in cartoon and comic art. This quarter we will look at the artwork of the Eisner Award winner illustrator/animator Mike Kunkel.

Entertain yourself as we create artwork showcasing their tagline:

Remember your childhood . . . and pass it on.."

Visit his studio website, www.astonishfactory.com. Their Mission Statement:

"The goal of the Astonish Factory is to introduce long-lasting, fun stories and appealing characters with heart, humor, meaning and positive values for all ages.
Longevity in business is created by simple rules:
Honesty, Quality, Integrity and Respect for the audience.
To be professional is of the upmost. The entertainment media, if used poorly, can have a negative impact on all ages. We strive to show that we care about those that we work with and work for, both in our company and in the audience."

We look forward to you joining our scribble time on Mondays from 330-430.

"Here at the Astonish Factory you'll find the creations of Astonish creator Mike Kunkel.

Nominated three times for the prestigious Eisner awards and four Ignatz awards, Mike Kunkel is the creator of the 2002 and 2003 Eisner Award-winning comic book series "Herobear and the kid”, also the inventive series "Flipped", and the brand new critically-acclaimed book “The Land of Sokmunster.”

In his spare time, he is an accomplished juggler, deep sea diver, astronaut, race car driver, gourmet chef, world class magician, profootball wide receiver, big wave surfer, and frequent storyteller.

Well . . . actually only the the storyteller part is true. He’s worked as a storyteller for nearly 15 years as a Director, Story and Development Artist, Character Designer, Screenwriter and Animator in Television and on Feature Films for such studios as Warner Bros, Sony Entertainment, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Universal Pictures and Walt Disney Studios.

But, he soon realized that to be truly happy he had to work on his own stories and characters. . . and he found the perfect place to do that very thing with his friends here at Astonish."
